News in and around Rippey:

Kane Borgeson accompanied his grandparents, Al and Ann Frederick, to the Amana Colonies on Saturday, Oct. 10, where they all participated in the Iowa state corn husking contest.  Ann and Kane both took first place in their age groups and qualified for the national contest which will be held Oct. 18 West in West Lafayette, IN. Kane was a state winner in 2014, also.

Ann competed in the senior women’s class and Kane in the youth class for ages 15-20. Ann picked for 20 minutes and Kane for 10 minutes. The contest is a timed event with discounts against the weight of the corn picked and in the wagon for missed ears, and then the weight, by ounces, of shucks still on the picked ears. Horse drawn wagons were used with a few mule teams to go along with the pickers. “It was a great day to pick and it was lots of fun,” Ann Frederick said.

The members of Bye, Bye, Blues met with Doris Brown on Oct. 8.  Those attending were Eleanor Alex of Grand Junction, Marilyn Pentico and Lois McDowell of Perry and Jean Borgeson of Rippey.  As always, these ladies enjoy visiting and reminiscing. They all belonged to the former Alice Blue Rebekah Lodge #414 in Rippey and when it closed, the members started meeting in the library to keep up with each other’s lives. As the membership dwindled, Doris has opened her home for the meetings that are held during the spring, summer and fall. The next meeting will be the final one for this season and will be a noon potluck dinner.  The collection will go to the food pantry.

Sharon Laub and Virgene Morse of Rippey, as well as Joyce Laub of Grand Junction, joined the ‘49er’s group of Perry for lunch on Thursday.  The Perry graduates meet once a month for a couple hours of visiting and reminiscing.

Ben and Midge Vannatta went to a family party at the farm home where Pat and Steve McPherson are staying. A potluck dinner was enjoyed and afterwards they went out in the garage and painted HARVEST on 5 ft. boards. Everyone took one home. Barb and Vern Brock from Washington and their daughter from Des Moines, Shannon and Cindy Bryan, Doug Grow, Jeff Grow, and his three daughters and their children, Jack and Lois Gerken, Beth Bergstrom from Ames all attended the gathering.

Simpson College connections: Dale and Nancy Hanaman hosted Nancy’s  Simpson College friend Chris Brown and her husband Dan Mitchell from Neenah, WI, recently. Chris and Dennis were visiting family and attending the alumni events at the Simpson homecoming later in the week.

Nancy and Dale and Rachel Sacco met Sharon and Phil McBlain for lunch last Tuesday in Des Moines. Sharon and Phil were here to share in the 50th reunion for the Simpson College class of 1965. They traveled in the eastern part of the state before returning to Indianola for an awards event on Friday evening and a banquet for the 50 year class Saturday evening.  Also, as part of the homecoming events, Nancy Hanaman was among six honored for being 50 year members of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Following this event, the 50 year members gathered at the home of Bonnie McKinney.

Caucus training: Dale Hanaman, along with others from surrounding counties, was part of caucus training workshop for those who will be involved in the leadership of the February 2016 Presidential caucuses.
